Kiwi Spotting Tour

Stewart Island Kiwi Spotting is a must do attraction for all vistors and we offer you the chance on the this tour to see them in the wild going about their business without the confines of a cage or enclosed area. You will travel on board Matariki to The Neck, which is a place of great beauty with spectacular coastal scenery and home to the large Stewart Island Brown Kiwi or Tokoeka. It is also a place of significance to local Māori as a place they have occupied for over 700 years. Once at The Neck you will be guided around the area where the kiwi regularly feed. You will learn about the kiwi and the history of this great place along with the restoration work that is being undertaken. We have good toilet facilities and a shelter for your comfort along with a hot drink to keep you warm. The key features of this tour are covered below, 

Key Features

  • Operates daily in the evening, (minimum of 5 required for tour to proceed),
  • This is a guided tour with people who know about the kiwi and the history of Rakiura, 
  • You get 15 minute boat cruise across Paterson Inlet to "The Neck" passing some interesting land marks on the way, this is the closest kiwi spotting tour operation to Halfmoon bay.
  • You walk around "The Neck" area where the Kiwi live and feed providing you with a great chance to see this great New Zealand iconic bird.
  • Stop at the shelter for hot drink and a chance to learn and talk about your experience.
  • You can book on the day but booking in advanced is advised as this is one of the islands main attractions.
